If you run a Shopify store from London, New York or Dubai, hiring a Shopify developer in India can get you senior skills at a fraction of local rates. It can also get you a theme full of hard-coded hacks and a contractor who goes quiet after launch. The difference is almost entirely in how you hire. This guide covers the engagement models, honest cost ranges, the skills that matter on Shopify in 2026, and the red flags we see when merchants come to us after a project has gone wrong.

Why merchants hire Shopify developers in India

Cost is the obvious reason, but not the only one. India has a deep pool of developers who have worked on Shopify for years, many of them on stores that sell into the US, UK, Europe and the Middle East. The time-zone gap, handled well, means work moves forward while your team sleeps. And because Shopify is a hosted platform with a well-documented theme and app architecture, the work transfers cleanly across borders: there is no server for anyone to babysit.

The trade-off is that quality varies enormously. A Shopify developer in India might be a solo freelancer who learnt Liquid last year or a team that has shipped dozens of stores. Your job is to tell them apart before you sign.

Engagement models and typical costs

There are three common ways to work with an Indian Shopify team. The figures below are typical ranges we see in the market in 2026, not quotes; scope, seniority and urgency move them a lot.

ModelTypical costBest for
Freelancer (hourly)Roughly $15–$40 per hourSmall fixes, single features, stores with an in-house lead who can review code
Established team (fixed project)Roughly $3,000–$8,000 for theme customisation; $8,000–$25,000+ for a custom theme with integrationsNew stores, redesigns, migrations, anything with a clear scope
Dedicated developer or retainerRoughly $1,500–$5,000 per month per developerOngoing CRO work, frequent campaigns, a steady stream of features

Cheaper than $15 an hour usually means very junior work, heavy reliance on page-builder apps, or a reseller passing your project to someone you never meet. Rates near the top of the range should come with a project manager, code review and a proper QA pass.

Fixed-price projects protect your budget, but only if the scope is written down to the level of templates, sections, integrations and acceptance criteria. Hourly work is more flexible but needs weekly visibility of hours against progress. Our guide to outsourcing web development to India covers contracts, IP and payment milestones in more detail.

Skills to check in a Shopify developer

"Knows Shopify" is not a skill. Ask specifically about these, and ask for examples.

Liquid and Online Store 2.0 architecture

Every serious Shopify theme is built on Online Store 2.0: JSON templates, sections everywhere, and blocks your marketing team can rearrange in the theme editor without a developer. Shopify's newer themes, such as Horizon, go further with theme blocks that are defined once and can be nested inside each other. A good developer builds with these so you can edit content yourself. A weak one hard-codes banners into Liquid files, and every copy change becomes a ticket.

Metafields and metaobjects

Structured product data such as ingredients, size guides, sourcing details or care instructions belongs in metafields and metaobjects, not pasted into descriptions. For Organic Mandya, an organic food brand selling in the USA, we used metafields for nutrition and sourcing information. For Sareebuta, custom metafields power the filters shoppers use across 25+ countries. Ask candidates how they would model your product data before they write any code.

Shopify Functions and checkout extensibility

This is where outdated skills show up. Shopify Scripts stopped running on 30 June 2026, and checkout.liquid is no longer supported for the information, shipping and payment steps. Custom discounts, shipping rules and payment rules are now built with Shopify Functions, and checkout changes with checkout UI extensions. Note the plan limits: custom apps containing Functions only run on Shopify Plus, and customising the main checkout steps is Plus-only too. A developer who still talks about editing checkout.liquid has not kept up.

Apps and integrations

Most stores need something beyond the theme: an ERP or inventory sync, a regional payment gateway, a logistics partner, a review platform. On Alankari, an ethnic wear label, the work included payment gateway and logistics partner integration alongside custom product fields. Ask whether the developer has built a custom app with the Admin GraphQL API, handled webhooks, and dealt with API rate limits, not just installed apps from the App Store.

Performance and accessibility

Ask how they keep Core Web Vitals healthy: lazy-loading images, limiting app scripts, avoiding layout shift. Ask for a Lighthouse or PageSpeed report from a live store they built, on mobile.

How to vet a portfolio

Screenshots prove nothing. Use this checklist instead:

  1. 1Ask for three live store URLs and exactly what they built on each: whole theme, a few sections, or an integration.
  2. 2Open each store on your phone. Check speed, the menu, the cart drawer and product filters.
  3. 3View the page source. Lots of inline scripts from page-builder apps suggest the work was assembled rather than built.
  4. 4Ask to see a pull request or a short screen-share walk-through of their theme code. Look for Git, sensible section names and settings in the schema.
  5. 5Talk to one past client, ideally one outside India, about communication and what happened after launch.
  6. 6Run a small paid trial task of 5–15 hours before committing to a large project.
The best predictor of a good Shopify partner is not the portfolio but how clearly they explain what they would not build.

Time zones and communication

India is 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of the UK depending on the season, 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead of the US East Coast, and 1.5 hours ahead of the UAE. In practice, good teams offer two to four hours of overlap with Europe and the Middle East and an early-morning or late-evening call slot for the US.

What makes this work:

  • One named lead who speaks to you directly, not a sales contact who relays messages.
  • A shared task board with clear status, plus a short written update at the end of every working day.
  • A staging or duplicate theme for every change, with a preview link before anything goes live.
  • Agreed response times for urgent issues such as a broken checkout or a failed payment integration.

Red flags when hiring a Shopify developer in India

  • Asking for your main admin password. Developers should use a collaborator account or a staff account with limited permissions. Never share your owner login.
  • Editing the live theme directly. Changes should go to a duplicate theme, ideally connected to GitHub.
  • A quote with no questions. A fixed price given before anyone asks about your catalogue, markets, apps and integrations is a guess.
  • Solving everything with apps. Five apps to do the job of one well-built section slows the store and adds monthly fees.
  • Outdated vocabulary. Scripts, checkout.liquid or "vintage" themes proposed for new work in 2026.
  • No handover plan. You should receive the theme code, app access, documentation and a list of every app and its purpose.
  • Ownership kept back. The contract should give you full IP in custom code once you have paid.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer in India?

Typically $15–$40 an hour for freelancers, a few thousand dollars for theme customisation by an established team, and $8,000–$25,000 or more for a custom theme with integrations. Dedicated monthly developers usually cost $1,500–$5,000 a month.

Should I hire a freelancer or a team?

A freelancer suits small, well-defined tasks when someone on your side can review the work. For a new store, a redesign or anything touching checkout and integrations, a team gives you design, development, QA and cover when someone is on leave.

Does my developer need Shopify Plus experience?

Only if you are on Plus or planning to move. Plus unlocks checkout step customisation and custom Functions apps, which need specific experience. Our comparison of Shopify vs Shopify Plus explains when the upgrade makes sense.
