Shopify vs Shopify Plus in 2026: what Plus adds, what it costs, which features are no longer Plus-only, and how to tell if the upgrade pays for itself.

Cover comparing Shopify and Shopify Plus plans

Shopify vs Shopify Plus is rarely a question about features alone. Plus costs several times more than the Advanced plan, and most of what it adds only pays off once you have the volume, the team or the complexity to use it. This guide sets out what Plus actually includes in late 2026, what changed recently (several things that used to be Plus-only no longer are), and a simple way to work out whether the upgrade pays for itself.

What Shopify Plus costs in 2026

Shopify lists Plus from about $2,300 a month on a three-year term, or about $2,500 a month on a one-year term, in US dollars. Prices are set per region, so check your local pricing page. Higher-volume or more complex businesses move to a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model; Shopify does not publish that rate, so get it in writing from Shopify sales before you model costs.

For comparison, Shopify's top standard plan, Advanced, is listed in the US at $299 a month billed yearly or $399 billed monthly. The headline gap is therefore roughly $24,000 a year or more. The question is whether Plus saves or earns you more than that.

One saving that is easy to calculate: if you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an extra transaction fee of 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. On $5 million a year processed through a third-party gateway, that difference alone is $20,000.

What Shopify Plus adds today

Checkout customisation

This is the biggest practical difference. On every paid plan you can customise the thank you and order status pages with apps and use the checkout editor for branding basics. Only Plus can run apps that customise the information, shipping and payment steps, and only Plus gets the Checkout Branding API for deeper visual control.

The old way of doing this has gone. checkout.liquid is no longer supported for the checkout steps, and Shopify Scripts stopped running on 30 June 2026. Custom discount, shipping and payment logic now runs on Shopify Functions. Public App Store apps that use Functions work on any plan, but custom apps containing Functions, built just for your store, run only on Plus. If your pricing or shipping rules are unusual enough to need bespoke logic, that is a strong reason to upgrade.

B2B and wholesale

B2B used to be a Plus headline feature. It is now available on Basic, Grow and Advanced too, with companies, catalogues, net payment terms and self-serve ordering. What Plus still adds:

  • Unlimited B2B catalogues, against a limit of three active catalogues on the other plans.
  • Catalogues assigned directly to a company or company location, for customer-specific pricing.
  • Deposits, partial payments and payment requests per fulfilment.

If you sell to a handful of wholesale accounts on one or two price lists, Advanced may be enough. If every account has negotiated pricing, you need Plus.

Automation

Shopify Flow is free on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, so automation alone is not a reason to upgrade. Flow's HTTP request action, which lets workflows call other systems, is available from Grow upwards. Plus adds Flow tasks from custom partner apps, which matters when your developers build private integrations.

Expansion stores and scale

Plus includes your main store plus nine expansion stores, for example separate stores for wholesale, a second region or a staging environment. Additional stores cost extra. Plus also gives unlimited staff accounts (Advanced allows 15), up to 200 inventory locations (other plans allow 10), Shopify POS Pro, ShopifyQL Notebooks for reporting, Shopify Audiences and 24/7 priority support.

When the Plus upgrade pays for itself

In our experience, Plus is usually worth it when two or more of these are true:

  • You need checkout logic or fields no public app can provide, such as conditional payment methods or custom delivery rules.
  • Wholesale is a real channel with account-specific pricing, deposits or staged payments.
  • You run, or plan to run, several stores for different regions, brands within one business, or B2B and retail separately.
  • You process a large volume through a third-party gateway and the lower transaction fee covers a meaningful share of the subscription.
  • Your team has outgrown 15 staff accounts or 10 locations.
Plus pays for itself when it removes a workaround you are already paying for, not when it adds features you might use one day.

When Plus is not worth it

  • Your store does well on a standard checkout and your discounts are covered by native tools or App Store apps.
  • Your B2B needs fit within three catalogues.
  • You want Plus mainly for "enterprise" credibility or for Flow, which you already have.
  • You lack the developer capacity to build checkout extensions and Functions. Plus features need build work to deliver value.

A sound middle path: move to Advanced, optimise conversion and operations, and revisit Plus when a specific blocker appears. Often a well-built theme does more for revenue than a plan change. For Sareebuta, an ethnic wear store shipping to 25+ countries, the gains came from speed work, new features and custom metafields powering filters, not from a new plan. Our comparison of custom and premium Shopify themes covers that decision.

If you are comparing Plus with Magento or headless

Some merchants weighing Plus are really weighing platforms. Adobe Commerce (Magento) gives deeper back-end control but needs hosting, upgrades and a bigger development budget; see our Magento development page for when it still makes sense. Others want a fully custom front end; our guide to headless Shopify with Next.js explains the trade-offs, which apply on any plan but are most common on Plus.

Migration notes: moving to Plus

Upgrading an existing store to Plus is a billing and contract change, not a rebuild. Your theme, products, customers and orders stay where they are. The work comes after:

  1. 1Audit your checkout. List every customisation, app and tracking script that touches checkout and plan its replacement with checkout UI extensions, pixels or Functions.
  2. 2Plan expansion stores. Decide which markets or channels get their own store and how products, inventory and content sync between them.
  3. 3Set up B2B properly. Model companies, locations, catalogues and payment terms before inviting buyers.
  4. 4Review apps. Some apps have Plus-specific pricing tiers, and some may become redundant.
  5. 5Test on a duplicate theme and run through our Shopify launch checklist before switching anything live.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Shopify Plus per month?

Shopify lists it from about $2,300 a month on a three-year term or $2,500 on a one-year term. Larger businesses may pay a variable platform fee instead, agreed with Shopify sales.

Can I use B2B without Shopify Plus?

Yes. B2B is available on Basic, Grow and Advanced. Plus adds unlimited catalogues, company-specific catalogues and deposits or partial payments.

Can I customise checkout without Plus?

Partly. All paid plans can customise the thank you and order status pages and set checkout branding in the editor. Customising the information, shipping and payment steps requires Plus.
