WooCommerce payment gateways in India: how to set up checkout properly
How to choose and set up a WooCommerce payment gateway in India: UPI, cards and COD, block checkout and HPOS compatibility, webhooks and testing.
Most WooCommerce stores in India take payments through a payment aggregator such as Razorpay, Cashfree, PhonePe or PayU, which offers UPI, cards, netbanking and wallets through one plugin. Which provider you pick matters less than how the plugin is set up: whether it supports WooCommerce's block checkout, whether order statuses update reliably, and whether refunds and cash on delivery are handled cleanly.
This guide walks through the choice and the set-up, with checks you can run before launch. Fees and features change, so treat anything here as accurate at the time of writing (November 2026) and confirm with the provider.
How online payments work for an Indian WooCommerce store
The customer chooses a payment method at checkout, the gateway collects the payment and tells WooCommerce whether it succeeded, and the money is settled to your bank account later, minus fees. Your store never needs to hold card numbers. Under RBI rules on card-on-file data, entities other than card issuers and card networks cannot store actual card details. Merchants can keep only limited data, such as the last four digits and the issuer's name, for reconciliation. Saved cards work through tokens instead.
In practice, that means using your gateway's hosted or embedded checkout, so card data goes to the gateway and not to your server.
The main options at a glance
Each of these providers publishes an official WooCommerce plugin. Details below are from their listings at the time of writing.
| Plugin | Payment methods listed | Notes from the listing |
|---|---|---|
| Razorpay for WooCommerce | UPI, cards, netbanking, wallets | 100,000+ active installations. Changelog lists Checkout and Cart block support, HPOS compatibility, refunds and COD features. |
| Cashfree for WooCommerce | 100+ domestic and international payment modes, including COD | Changelog lists Checkout block and HPOS support. Merchants must whitelist their domain with Cashfree. |
| PhonePe Payment Solutions | Cards, UPI, netbanking | PhonePe's official plugin. Check the listing for block checkout support. |
PayU and other providers also offer WooCommerce integrations; check that you are installing the provider's current official plugin rather than an older or third-party one. For pricing, use each provider's own pricing page, as rates vary by payment method and business type.
Check compatibility before you choose
Two WooCommerce changes affect which plugins will work on your store:
- Block checkout. Since WooCommerce 8.3, the Cart and Checkout blocks are the default for new installations. A payment plugin has to register separately for the blocks, so an older plugin that only supports the shortcode checkout may not appear at all.
- High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS). Since WooCommerce 8.2, new installations store orders in dedicated tables. Payment plugins need to declare HPOS compatibility.
Existing stores were not switched automatically, so check which checkout and order storage your store uses under WooCommerce > Settings before testing a new gateway. If you are planning a WooCommerce update at the same time, see our WooCommerce 11 update guide.
Set-up checklist
- 1 Complete KYC with the provider and confirm which payment methods are enabled on your account. Some methods need separate activation.
- 2 Start in test mode with the provider's test keys on a staging copy of your store.
- 3 Configure webhooks with a secret, so WooCommerce gets payment updates even if the customer closes the browser before returning to your site.
- 4 Map order statuses. Decide when an order becomes Processing, and what happens to pending orders that are never paid.
- 5 Test every method on a phone. UPI often involves switching to a payment app and back, so test that flow on Android and iOS.
- 6 Test failures and refunds. Cancel a payment, let one time out, and issue a full and a partial refund from WooCommerce admin. Confirm the gateway dashboard matches.
- 7 Check emails and invoices. Customers should get a clear message for failed payments as well as successful ones.
- 8 Switch to live keys, place a small real order, refund it and check the settlement report.
Webhooks keep WooCommerce orders in sync with the gateway. Test them properly before launch.
Cash on delivery without the headaches
COD is still expected by many Indian shoppers, but returned and refused orders cost money. WooCommerce's built-in Cash on Delivery method can be limited to specific shipping methods, which is a simple way to offer it only where it makes sense. Some gateways add their own COD tools: Razorpay's changelog, for example, lists COD payment links and a Smart COD feature. Whatever you use, consider limits by order value or delivery area, and a confirmation step for high-value COD orders.
Keep the payment plugin updated
Payment plugins handle sensitive data, so update them promptly and read their changelogs. Even well-maintained official plugins ship security fixes: Razorpay's changelog, for example, lists fixes for access-control issues in versions 4.8.4 (CVE-2026-3507) and 4.8.8. Test updates on staging first, then apply them quickly. This is general information, not security advice for your specific store.
For GST invoices and tax settings, WooCommerce's tax settings and an invoicing plugin can help you produce GST invoices, but the rules depend on your business. Check your set-up with your accountant; this is not tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
Which payment gateway is best for WooCommerce in India?
There is no single best option. Compare the methods your customers use, fees for your business type, settlement times, plugin compatibility with your checkout, and the quality of support.
Can I use more than one gateway?
Yes. Some stores keep a second gateway as a backup or for international cards. Keep the checkout simple, though: too many options can confuse customers.
Why do paid orders sometimes stay pending?
Usually because the customer didn't return to the site and webhooks weren't configured or were blocked by a firewall or security plugin. Check webhook logs on both sides.
