Shopify announced its Fall '26 Edition, called "Exponential", on 28 October 2026. For most merchants the headline changes are a rebuilt Sidekick, a redesigned admin, Canvas for visual store editing, new fraud and dispute tools under the name Shopify Protect, and a lot more work on selling through AI agents such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Gemini.

Not everything is switched on for every store yet. Some features are in early access, some are rolling out gradually and a few are US only. This summary covers what was announced, what it means in practice and what is worth checking in your own admin at the time of writing (November 2026).

A rebuilt Sidekick and a new-look admin

Sidekick, Shopify's built-in AI assistant, has been rebuilt. According to Shopify's merchant announcement, it can now run calculations, write code, search the internet and remember what you teach it, and changes it proposes still need your approval before they take effect. Shopify also says daily Sidekick sessions grew 4.2 times year on year.

The admin itself has a new design: updated colour, type, spacing and icons, a collapsible side navigation that holds search, notifications and the store picker, and Sidekick as a floating chat at the bottom of every page. Shopify's Help Center says Sidekick presents changes for your review before applying them, can work through multi-step tasks in the background, and notes that it cannot run code in some stores yet, so capabilities can differ from one store to the next.

  • What it means: routine admin work (reports, bulk edits, small theme tweaks) can increasingly be described in plain language rather than done by hand.
  • What to watch: review what Sidekick proposes before you approve it, especially anything touching prices, discounts or theme code.

Canvas: visual store editing with Sidekick

Canvas first appeared in Shopify's changelog on 1 October 2026 and is part of the Edition. It shows your whole store on one surface, and you can click an element to edit it or ask Sidekick for anything from a small change to a full redesign. Shopify describes it as being in early access.

The changelog lists some important limits at launch:

  • Third-party themes from the Shopify Theme Store are not supported.
  • Markets, rollouts and translations are not supported.
  • App blocks and app embeds are not supported.
  • Themes edited in Canvas do not receive theme updates.

Canvas works on a copy: you create a new theme in Canvas or duplicate an existing Shopify or custom theme into it, and the original stays in the normal theme editor. That makes it reasonable to experiment with, but stores that rely on apps with theme blocks or on international markets should treat it as a preview for now.

Shopify Protect, payments and POS

Shopify Protect brings Shopify's fraud and chargeback tools together. Shopify's announcement says it is on for every business using Shopify Payments, with core protections at no extra cost. It blocks card-testing bots, asks customers to confirm risky payments, declines payments Shopify is nearly certain are fraudulent before they reach the bank, explains order risk in plain language and helps assemble dispute evidence. A separate Rule Builder app lets merchants write and test their own fraud rules; at the time of writing Shopify describes it as a waitlist.

Other commerce updates from the Edition include:

  • Seven new local payment methods through Shopify Payments: Alipay, WeChat Pay, MB WAY, OXXO, Satispay, Scalapay and GrabPay. All work in online checkout, and most also work with Shop Pay, the Shop app and Shopify POS.
  • Wider in-store customer recognition in Shopify POS. When a shopper chooses a digital receipt and agrees to share details, POS can link the purchase to a customer profile using the network of people who have checked out at Shopify Payments stores.
  • Shop Promise, a free programme for eligible US stores that shows delivery and returns badges on qualifying products.

Selling through AI agents

The largest share of the announcement is about agentic commerce: shoppers asking an AI assistant to find and buy products. The main pieces are:

Feature What it does
Shopify connectors for AI agents Lets merchants manage products, inventory, orders and performance from inside nine AI agents, including ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and Perplexity.
Knowledge base A page under Sales channels > Agentic where you review and publish the facts AI agents receive about your store, such as return windows and shipping destinations.
Catalog eligibility view Shows whether your store is eligible for Shopify Catalog, which feeds product data to AI channels, and links to fixes for any blockers.
Shop Pay in personal agents Shop Pay checkout inside agents from launch partners, with the buyer approving purchases and the card never shared with the agent.
Universal Checkout on Shop One checkout in the Shop app for carts containing products from several merchants, respecting each merchant's checkout rules.

For developers, Shopify says every Liquid and Hydrogen storefront and checkout now exposes WebMCP tools, so browser-based agents can search products, update the cart and complete checkout after buyer approval, using the same validation as the normal checkout.

The practical takeaway: your product data, policies and store facts are now read by software as well as people, so keeping them accurate matters more than it did.

What changes for developers and agencies

The developer announcement has a few items with longer-term consequences:

  • A new theme architecture where page structure lives in the Liquid template rather than a separate JSON file, with blocks, typed contracts, partial updates, markdown files that guide AI agents and built-in Tailwind styling. Themes built this way can be edited with Sidekick in Canvas.
  • Hydrogen has been rebuilt and is generally available, and works with any framework and runtime. Vercel Shop, an open source Next.js template built on the Hydrogen SDK, is also generally available.
  • App security checks through a single Shopify CLI command that scans app code for issues such as unauthenticated routes and unverified webhooks.
  • Collaborator request details, which show merchants more about a partner organisation before they grant store access, such as how long it has been on Shopify and where the request came from.

None of these forces an immediate rebuild of an existing Online Store 2.0 theme. They are worth factoring into any theme project planned for 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to do anything because of the Fall '26 Edition?

Nothing in the Edition announcement itself carries a hard deadline. Separate platform changes do, such as storefront script tags stopping on 1 March 2027 and market-driven shipping becoming the default on 1 July 2027.

Is Canvas ready to use on a live store?

It is in early access and does not support app blocks, app embeds, markets or Theme Store themes, and Canvas themes stop receiving theme updates. Treat it as something to try on a duplicate theme for now.

Does Shopify Protect cost extra?

Shopify says the core protections are included at no extra cost for businesses on Shopify Payments. The Rule Builder app is separate; check its App Store listing for current terms.

The bottom line

The Fall '26 Edition is mostly about AI: Sidekick doing more of the admin work, Canvas for design, and a growing set of tools for selling through AI agents. In the next few weeks it is worth opening Sales channels > Agentic to check your Catalog eligibility and review your knowledge base, confirming you understand what Shopify Protect is doing on your orders, and holding off on Canvas for any theme that depends on app blocks. Check each feature's availability in your own admin before planning around it, as many are still rolling out.
